چکیده

Lactating dairy cows have unique reproductive responses compared to when they were heifers that result in distinctly different reproductive measurements and pregnancy outcomes that can be partially overcome with pharmacological strategies. These parameters include circulating progesterone and estradiol concentrations, ovulatory follicle and corpus luteum diameter, incidence of anovulation and double ovulations, time in estrus, pregnancies per artificial insemination and pregnancy losses. Circulating concentrations of progesterone during diestrus are approximately half that in cows compared with heifers. This marked difference in progesterone is likely the explanation for an increased size in diameter of the ovulatory follicle and incidence of double ovulations in cows compared with heifers. Differences in diameter of the ovulatory follicle may explain why cows have greater corpora lutea diameters compared to heifers. The increase in double ovulations appears to be a key driver in the increase in twinning and pregnancy loss as dairy heifers transition to primiand multiparous cows. Reduced estradiol concentrations in cows at time of estrus helps to explain the decreased duration of estrus in cows compared with heifers. Concentrations of progesterone during growth of the ovulatory follicle may be a key driver in differences in pregnancies per AI in cows compared with heifers. The difference in circulating progesterone may be related to LH overstimulation of the oocyte/cumulus complex in cows compared to when they were heifers. Pharmacological strategies have been developed in lactating dairy cows to manipulate ovarian development to create a hormonal environment similar to that of heifers. Three primary strategies, Presynch-11, G6G and Double Ovsynch appear to enhance fertility of dairy cows. This review discusses how these three strategies manipulate ovarian development similar to that of heifers and why compelling data indicate these programs should be referred to as “fertility programs.”

Effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on ovarian function and prostaglandin secretion in lactating dairy cows

As lactating cows in severe negative energy balance have poor reproductive performance, the effect of dietary fat supplementation (fish oil, soybean oil) on PGFM secretion, ovarian function and blood metabolites is investigated. In this experiment, the effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on plasma metabolites, ovarian function and prostaglandin secretion of 20 primiparous Holstein co...

The Relationships Between Milk Production and Some Blood Metabolites and Their Effects on Returning to Estrus in Lactating Holstein Dairy Cows

In this study, the relationships and correlations between milk production and some blood metabolites related to energy and protein balance and their effects were investigated on returning to estrus after AI in lactating Holstein dairy cows. Blood and milk samples were collected from sixty lactating Holstein dairy cows based on their reproductive status in 13-17 d post AI. BUN, MUN, glucose, tri...

Economics of Fertility Management of Small Holding Dairy Farms in Bangladesh

Considering different fertility traits 411 cows from 73 farms used for economic analyses. From these, 202 lactating cows were selected for evaluating the fertility status. Pre-tested data sheets were used to record the socioeconomic status of the farms including their assets, cost and return and productive and reproductive performance of the dairy cows. Targets were set considering the situatio...

Challenges to fertility in dairy cattle: from ovulation to the fetal stage of pregnancy

One critical determinant of fertility is the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy after insemination or embryo transfer. Pregnancy success is low in lactating dairy cows. Reduced fertility of the dairy female is only expressed in the lactational state but the magnitude of depression of fertility is not related to milk yield. Pregnancy failure occurs throughout gestation with the greatest ...

Alterations of the electrocardiographic parameters in relation to circulating electrolytes and cardiac enzymes during different productive states of high producing Holstein dairy cows

BACKGROUND: Dairy cows undergo physiological changes during pregnancy and lactation and cardiovascular system may alter during these periods. OBJECTIVES: Understanding the physiological effects of production periods of dairy cows on heart electrical activities can aid to better monitoring the cardiovascular system in these animals. METHODS: Five multiparous Holstein dairy cows were studied from...
